Hi Maury,

Good to know that my humble advice has led you to an UREI power-amp with which you now find sonic bliss, so to speak. Here's hoping said UREI continues to give you years of musical enjoyment.

Oh yes, I too have heard great things about the classic SAEs. I also share your enthusiasm for the vintage Quads (I especially liked my own 303) and I do hope you find one to try out. Also, I've heard great things about the Quad 520 (and mono-bloc 510s) with claims that they're perhaps amongst the world's best. Perhaps you may also want to try one of those.

Enjoy the music.

Cheers,
Winston.

Hello WAJ,

I finally got a working 6260 UREI.amp. This is the 150W version. The first one I got had a strange but subtle power supply fault and I had to discard. The second one seems to be in fine shape and has been playing for a month or so. I indicated before that I had been moving in the direction you ably advocate for a number of years but had come up with nothing better than the Audio Alchemy OM 150. The UREI is better than the AA amp but mainly in the treble. The Alchemy amp does have a nice low midrange unlike most other current SS amps. However, its treble is a bit honey colored although not rolled off. The UREI manages the difficult trick of a clear extended treble paired with great lower midrange power and very gooddeep bass. It is a very well balanced sound. In my searches I also ran across some recommendations for the SAE X series amps also of the 1980s. I have never heard them though. Anyway thanks for advocacy of the UREI as it is an excellent SS amp and has much better tonality than any current SS amp I have heard. I would be curious to hear some of the older Quads as well and may buy one next year to test.

Hello WAJ,

I am looking around for a UREI 6250 as I need 150W to drive my Magnepans. In reviewing the manuals, it appears that their XLR inputs are non standard with pins 2 and 3 flipped from current standards. Do you use the XLR or the 1/4 " jacks (Balanced or unbalanced??)? If you have tried both do you note any differences? Thanks Maury

BTW I went back to my old Audio Alchemy amp several years ago which turned out to be better than the various other supposedly better amps I tried. It also has a lower midrange balance. It features a separate power supply and class A bias for the first 25 watts. Unfortunately it is hard to find these days in working condition.
